DB+A provided the preliminary architectural design for a 42,000sf building shell in Santa Cruz, California that would eventually become REI’s new retail location. The DB+A team worked closely with the REI design team to incorporate their development requirements and produce a final product that was both visually appealing and functionally successful.

In addition to the general architecture services provided, DB+A elevated the design aesthetic by using textured materials and dramatic façade elements to help the retailer stand out. They also created unique social spaces for customers and employees to enjoy, including a crescent bench design for regular outdoor presentations and learning opportunities. DB+A also coordinated the upgraded utilities based on REI requirements, designed a new truck receiving area, and recycling enclosure.
